Addison-Wesley Professional And Nokia To Jointly Publish Nokia Mobile Developer Series

February 20, 2004

First Series Designed to Meet Specialized Needs of Nokia Mobile Application Developers

Boston, MA - Addison-Wesley Professional, the leading publisher of technical books for professionals, and an imprint of media conglomerate Pearson Inc. (NYSE: PSO), today announced a joint project with mobile communications leader Nokia, (NYSE: NOK) to publish a mobile developer book series.

The series will focus on application development guidelines, tools, and best practices using Nokia's software platforms for mobile developers. Nokia engineers, key mobile developer industry leaders and members of Forum Nokia, the company's mobile developer community, will write, review and contribute to the books. Forum Nokia (http://www.forum.nokia.com) reaches more than 1.3 million subscribers and provides an ideal technical review environment.

The first book in the series will be Developing Series 60 Applications: A Guide for Symbian OS C++ Developers (ISBN 0321227220) by Leigh Edwards, Richard Barker and other authors from EMCC Software, Ltd. The book will be the official Nokia guide to mobile application development on the Series 60 Platform. The Series 60 Platform brings open standards and multi-vendor support to the smartphone market. The book will publish March 2004, with an exclusive early edition available at 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, France, February 23-26. 3GSM attendees can see the book at the Nokia booth located in Hall 1, #A9.

"The audience of software developers around the world seeking to take advantage of Nokia's open software platforms has grown tremendously. With millions of Nokia Developer Platform compliant devices in use worldwide, we recognized a tremendous need for centralized, documented information validated by an independent and respected third-party," said Lee Epting, vice president, Forum Nokia. "Given our commitment to assisting developers and the recent progress in unified testing and certification programs, publishing was the next obvious step in our strategy to support the mobile development community.

"Together with Addison-Wesley Professional we will be able to deliver superior resources to further grow our global mobile application developers' skill set," added Ms. Epting.

"Writing this book, of nearly 800 pages, was a considerable undertaking, done to demonstrate our company's expertise and belief in the Series 60 Platform," remarked Garry Partington, Chief Technical Officer of EMCC Software. "Over the past six years of working with Symbian OS and Series 60 we have trained thousands of developers worldwide. EMCC Software has acquired extensive experience in Series 60 development and we decided to extend our commitment and services to the developer community by passing on some of the benefits of our expertise."

"We are thrilled that Nokia has chosen us to oversee this important publishing venture. Both companies have a lot in common through their universal commitment to the developer community and innovative technologies," said John Wait, Executive Vice President and Publisher, Addison-Wesley Professional.

"The boom in mobile applications development is being driven both by a new breed of developers who cut their teeth in the mobile environment, as well as developers for whom the migration to wireless platforms represents an important opportunity," added Wait. "As it has always been a part of our publishing strategy to release books on new technologies ahead of the curve, this series is perfectly timed to coincide with the needs of both audiences."

Subsequent books in the series will focus on Nokia's Developer Platform for Series 40, a technology that delivers color displays, Java(TM) programmability, and multimedia messaging to the mass market, and Series 90, a feature-rich platform providing an excellent environment for media consumption, mobile services and a true Internet experience. Both books will publish in late 2004/early 2005.
