Netscape's Mozilla.org to Begin Release of Netscape Messenger Source Code to the Internet Developer Community

Developers Gain Access to New User Interface, IMAP Integration and Better Performance in Email Code

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (May 12, 1998) -- Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: NSCP) today announced that beginning this week the mozilla.org team will start collaboration with the developer community on the next generation of the Netscape Messenger mail source code for Communicator 5.0. With the initial release of Communicator 5.0 source code six weeks ago, the mozilla.org Web site will begin rolling out the Netscape Messenger source code to developers this week. When the release of Messenger source code is complete, Netscape will have released source code to all the major components of Netscape Communicator, including Navigator for browsing, Composer for page editing and Messenger for mail and news.

"Since releasing the Netscape Communicator 5.0 source code, Mozilla.org has experienced incredible participation and interaction with the Internet developer community," said Tom Paquin, Netscape fellow and manager of mozilla.org. "By starting the release of the Messenger source code this week, we believe mozilla.org will continue to promote the evolution of the Communicator 5.0 development process by leveraging the extensive developer talent on the Net."

Included in the release of the Netscape Messenger mail source code will be a customizable three-pane user interface designed to make users more productive. The three panes give Messenger users an integrated view of mail folders, newsgroups and message content, and can be easily resized and closed to customize the interface to user needs. The Messenger source code will allow developers to further improve Messenger's performance and functionality in areas such as IMAP and centralized management.

This week's release of source code will be available by accessing www.mozilla.org.
