Here's a summary of OS/2 news in PC Week's April 6, 1992, issue:

Much of the issue is devoted to WinHype on the day Federal Express
finally delivers those packages sitting the warehouses. However,
there is some important OS/2 news.

Microsoft will indeed exclude support for OS/2 from C/C++ 7.0
compiler. OS/2 developers will be "stranded" (by Microsoft, anyway).
The only way, Microsoft said, it would support OS/2 would be if it
made a "strong impact" or if Borland failed to deliver quality tools.

OS/2 2.0 makes deadline by minutes. The final code was posted
electronically a few minutes before midnight on March 31, and IBM
delivered disks to many customers the next morning. Analysts predict
1992 OS/2 shipments of 2 to 4 million; Microsoft estimates 200,000,
"maybe a little more."

Resellers plan to discount Windows 3.1 and OS/2. Story about deep
discounts off list price for both products.

Microsoft and IBM agree to swap code. With the long running dispute
heating up over the past few weeks, both companies will swap source
code for their finished products. They came to such an agreement two
weeks ago. The companies have still not determined royalty payments.

First Look: OS/2 2.0 Finally Here and It Works. Largely positive
first impression, but it isn't clear whether this First Look is based
on the release code.

Editorial/Opinion. William Zachmann warns of "broken" apps with
Windows 3.1.

"Other GUI Options" in the Windows 3.1 section.

"Rumor Central," Spencer Katt. Talks about OS/2 2.0 rollout at New
York PC Users Group on 3/31. Speculates that IBM is considering an ad
in which a man walks through an office full of users staring at
screens with Windows UAEs. Also, he speculates that IBM will give
away certain 32-bit apps for certain users. User blames Windows 3.1
for accidentally depositing $7 million into his checking account
(managed by Quicken) -- purrfectly "golden" Win 3.1 code. Mentions
OS/2 2.0 credits screen (with CTRL-ALT-SHIFT-O).

Article about ISV support for both Windows 3.1 and OS/2 2.0.

Oh, come on. Even if only the 300,000 beta testers that Stac made reference
to upgrade (they went through all the trouble to get the beta, you BET they
are going to upgrade) that's 300,000. And what about the rush on the
1-800-3-IBM-OS2 number? 100 operators? I think that's more than even 2-4
million.

Sorry, personal opinion.

Frankly, I'm pleasently surprised to see both positive OS/2 and negative
Windows press in the same issue.

This is of great interest... could someone paraphrase?

30,000 beta testers- Stac made a multiplication error <g>. MS is truely brain
dead if they think OS/2 will only sell 200000 copies though- the corporations
will eat more than that alone. Add in end users and you have sales in the
millions (mostly corporate).

They have 300 operators right now, are taking approx. 2400 orders a day. They
would have more operators but they're at capacity right now! (As per the OS/2
people in the IBM tower here in Atlanta, where the ordering info is being done).

I don't know about Win 3.1, but OS/2 2.0 now has over 1000 ISV's developing
over 2500 32-bit apps. Thats up from 10 last April! 250 alone in the last week!

Something doesn't seem right 2400 orders for 300 operators is 8 order per
day per operator. This can not be capacity.

I heard the operators are averaging an order every 3 minutes per operator.
This works out to 20 per hour * 100 operator * 8 hours = 16,000 per day
* 5 days = 80,000 per week * 4 weeks = 320,000 per month * 12 months =
3,840,000 per year. Of course, this will change when the shelves get full
of OS/2 2.0 and is only what I heard.

Add in the pre-installed copies from IBM and RELY ... OS/2 2.0 will
certainly sell more than 200,000 copies.
