(SCO), the world's leading supplier of open system software for microcomputers, today announced that its SCO Open Desktop, SCO UNIX System V/386 Release 3.2, and SCO XENIX 386 operating systems will support the new 50-MHz Intel486 DX microprocessor. The SCO MPX performance extension for multiple-processor SCO systems will also support the new CPU. The 50-MHz Intel486 DX, which is 50 percent faster than the earlier 33-MHz version, delivers the computing power, scalability, and multiprocessing capability that today's demanding computing environments need. It provides both traditional multiuser PC systems and client/server distibuted computing environments with increased performance, multiprocessing capability, and the flexibility to expand as more users are added. With SCO operating systems running on 50-MHz Intel486 DX-based systems, OEMs, VARs, systems integrators and users can build powerful distributed computing solutions for both business and technical environments, as well as large-scale multiuser systems. Doug Michels, SCO's co-founder and executive vice president, said, ``SCO is excited about the availability of the 50-MHz Intel486 DX chip and the tremendous opportunity it brings to the UNIX System marketplace. SCO customers and resellers will now be able to build larger and more powerful open system platforms than ever before. Intel has been listening to its customers and has delivered what they wanted great price/performance. ``This significant leap in Intel microprocessor performance,'' said Michels, ``provides greater investment protection for existing SCO customers, resellers, and independent software vendors, while extending the range of SCO solutions available to the market. For multiprocessor systems based on this new 486 chip, SCO MPX will amplify multiuser and server performance to a new level.'' SCO MPX is uniquely qualified to unleash the full power of 32-bit, 486-based, multiple-processor computers that are used as workstations, servers, or multiuser systems running SCO system software. With SCO MPX, users can increase system performance as their requirements demand. After SCO Open Desktop or SCO UNIX System V is installed on the first processor, each additional SCO MPX package enables another processor to share the processing of the system's total workload. Scott McGregor, SCO's vice president and general manager of Distributed Corporate Computing, said, ``With the introduction of the new 50-MHz Intel486 DX, the ACE initiative continues to rely on Intel as a key player in the open system movement that is bringing the PC into a more powerful and important role. SCO Open Desktop running on 50-MHz Intel486 DX-based systems offers a powerful open system solution for today's demanding commercial workstation and server environments. It's clear that Intel's x86 architecture will satisfy many users' needs throughout the decade.'' The ACE (Advanced Computing Environment) initiative was announced in April of this year by SCO and 20 other leading hardware and software vendors. The ACE initiative establishes standards for advanced computing systems that will provide connectivity with customers' existing network environments and give customers access to the largest base of new and existing off-the-shelf applications that can run on a wide range of computers. Among the components of the ACE initiative are a unified UNIX System -- SCO Open Desktop -- and full support for Intel x86-based, industry-standard PCs and PC systems.
