SCO and Caldera Release Technology Preview of AIX 5L -- 64 Bit UNIX OS for Intel Itanium Processors

New Preview with Linux Affinity Targets Developers, Hardware Providers; Caldera Systems Reaffirms its Support of Unified UNIX and Linux Technologies

SANTA CRUZ, Calif.--April 23, 2001-- The Santa Cruz Operation Inc. (SCO) (Nasdaq: SCOC) and Caldera Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CALD), Monday announced a technology preview release of AIX 5L version 5.1, a commercial 64 bit UNIX operating system for Intel(R) Itanium(TM) processors.

AIX 5L is the result of Project Monterey, a cooperative effort between SCO and IBM, to develop the next generation UNIX operating system for Intel Itanium(TM) processors.

A complementary part of the SCO server product line, AIX 5L is endorsed by several leading OEMs, ISVs and IHVs. AIX 5L enables ISVs and customers to address a range of environments from workgroup servers to the largest data center servers using a single source tree, simply by recompiling.

With its Linux affinity, AIX 5L offers a flexible environment enabling Linux applications to run on AIX 5L. This includes everything from Web server applications to 24 X 7 mission-critical enterprise applications.

For the technology preview release only of AIX 5L, licenses will be free of charge and will not include support. Pricing and support for future releases will be determined at the time of each such release. AIX 5L is built for Itanium(TM)-based systems and the preview release will be limited to customers with Itanium(TM)-based systems.
