SAN FRANCISCO -- June 11, 2003 -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) today announced an agreement demonstrating broadening support for Java(tm) software on the desktop. Today's announcement underscores the value of Java software to consumers and reinforces the developer commitment to the Java platform.

Sun and HP Agreement

HP plans to ship the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) on a broad range of its business and consumer desktop and notebook PCs starting as early as the third quarter of this year. As a result, HP customers worldwide will easily be able to enjoy the latest content and applications created by more than three million developers.

"Sun is delighted that HP has chosen to offer its personal systems' customers the newest industry-standard Java technology. We expect that many more PC OEMs and large consumer application providers will also begin distributing the latest JRE from Sun," said Jonathan Schwartz, executive vice president of software, Sun Microsystems.

"Shipping Java technology from Sun on our desktops and notebook PCs will allow us to offer our customers a rich Web experience," said Robyn West, vice president of marketing, Americas Personal Systems Group, HP. "In addition to the millions of Web pages with fun, useful Java content on them today, this agreement also expands the exciting potential for developers to create more compelling content and applications in the years to come."

For consumers who purchase personal computers that do not yet offer the latest version of Java software, it can now be downloaded for free at http://java.com.
